The Problem with Most Content Strategies
Most brands publish blog posts reactively — chasing trending keywords, repurposing competitor content, or writing whatever the CEO thinks sounds good. The result? A scattered content library that doesn't rank for anything meaningful.
Topical authority takes the opposite approach. Instead of trying to rank for isolated keywords, you build comprehensive coverage of an entire subject area, signaling to Google that your site is the definitive resource on a topic.
How We Mapped the Content Universe
For a B2B SaaS client in the project management space, we started by mapping every question their target audience could possibly have — across awareness, consideration, and decision stages. The result: a universe of 340 content topics, organized into 12 pillar clusters.
The Pillar-Cluster Architecture
Each cluster has one comprehensive pillar page (4,000+ words covering the broad topic) supported by 8-15 cluster articles targeting specific sub-topics and long-tail questions. Internal linking connects every cluster article back to the pillar.
Quality Over Velocity
We published 3 pieces per week — not 10. Each piece went through original research, expert quotes, and a rigorous editing process. Every post had a clear unique angle that existing content didn't cover.
The Results After 6 Months
Organic traffic increased by 420%. 43 target keywords reached page 1. The client's domain authority increased from 28 to 47. And most importantly, organic-sourced demo requests grew by 185%.
